Contraceptive Methods - The Pill, Contraceptive Patch, Contraceptive Ring
Oral contraceptives have made it possible for women to control their pregnancy. Emergency contraceptives are also very common amongst women who are sexually active. “The pill” and the “mini pill” are different names given to emergency contraceptives that can be used up to 120 hours after unprotected sexual intercourse. The effectiveness of a pill called ellaOne is 98% if taken within 24 hours from unprotected sexual intercourse. This is a boon for women who are caught up in the heat of the moment. It is also helpful when a condoms splits during sexual intercourse.
One of the latest inventions in the world of contraception is the contraceptive ring. This ring, which is sold under the name NuvaRing, provides continuous protection against pregnancy for up to a month after its use. This small ring needs to be inserted in the vagina and worn for three weeks. It releases estrogen and progesterone into your body and suppresses the process of ovulation.
Another effective method of preventing a pregnancy is use of contraceptive patch. Evra, one of the most popular contraceptive patches, has been launched on the market recently. More than 1% of women use this patch in the UK. Evra is a sticky patch that you need to put on your skin and it releases hormones that prevent you from getting pregnant. This patch is light pink in colour and fairly small in size for an easy fit. Always consult a doctor before you use any of the above mentioned methods for preventing an unwanted pregnancy.
